Separations...

A friend suggested that I separate the males from the females, since I have two tanks and pretty much know what all the snails are by now.

Well, I did this... but accidentally left one female in the wrong tank. She had all three males on her tonight at once-- it seemed that they would tear her apart. I didn't want to interfere... but then I did after they fell off the aquarium wall into a pile. There was a problem though, she looked just like one of the males. When I got them apart I wasn't sure if I had the right snail. Five minutes after the new (possibly female) snail was in the female tank-- it turned out he was a he: he was already getting on (or, in, rather) a female! She was struggling, closing her shell and trying to grab on to a nearby leaf.

I had no idea they would be so dramatic!

I grabbed him and switched the two look-a-likes. Everyone seems to be leaving each other alone now. We have enough babies already! Someone came by and took 22 today. I still think I have over 50...

hello - i do not have any pictures as of yet of my wonderful apple snails (thanks Lauren!) but they do seem to be getting along well in the various tanks. i have about 14 apple snails, spread out in three tanks - 20gal with coreys, danios and cherry shrimp, 55gal with all sorts of interesting creatures, and 2.5 gal with Mr. Beta. i have had a variety of snails in my tanks since i can remeber - they tend to come on plants, with fish, etc. - and have always loved watching them do what snails do best.

i cant wait for the apple snails to start growing so i can find them amongst the plants *grin* - and taking on their pretty pink hue.

Moby, the mother

Here is Moby, the mother of all the babies. She's a beauty.

I adopted 7 apple snails from Laren on Feb 5th. They are placed in a breeder tank with my cherry shrimps. They have grown alot in such a short period of time. It's amazing!

I adopted 10 baby snails from Laren on Monday. They're all doing quite well, hanging out in a ubiquitous Eclipse 3-gallon aquarium. I currently have ten Endler's Livebearers in with them. Endlers are beautiful little guppies that look like 70's disco divas, and are prolific like the typical guppy but a lot hardier. I've fallen in love with this species of fish, for some reason.

I'm upgrading to a natural planted tank as soon as I get my boyfriend's permission to get a larger aquarium for the living room. If you haven't heard of a natural planted aquarium, you basically get rid of your filters and heavily plant your aquarium with lots of plants. You let the plants do the filtration, like in nature. No more weekly water changes...

This blog is for all the people that have gotten apple snails from me. My friend Sara pointed out that it'd be so nice to be able to keep up to date with how all the snails are doing-- spread out around the Bay Area.
