Yes, the probuscus you speak of is a tube that goes directly into their single lung. Very cool. It's actually a piece of their flesh that wraps into a hollow tube. For... mating... they have a different probuscus, it's much brighter white and more muscular looking.

the life of apple snails - or eating and growing and growing!
where oh where did my post go? in brief - my 8-12 apple snails are growing up to be beautiful purple ping-pongs, although in some tanks they have not passed the wasabi pea stage. i hope everyone is having as great results as i am!
anyone else notice the odd probuscus on the left side of their heads seemingly used for sucking up breaths of air and perhaps...mating...? so odd!
also - to the fisrt poster with endlers - anyone want to trade some males with me? i am hoping to strengthen my gene pool a bit by introducing new males to my endler family. my males look just like the picture posted, but they develop blue/red topfins over time. so pretty!
